What to Do While Waiting for Veterinary Guidance

Keep the pet quiet, prevent access to trash or questionable substances, and follow the clinic’s instructions about food and water. If the pet continues to vomit, becomes weaker, develops a swollen abdomen, seems painful, or shows another urgent sign, update the veterinarian promptly. Do not delay care because the pet briefly seems better between episodes.

General information can help owners observe and communicate. It cannot determine the cause of vomiting in an individual dog or cat, and it should not replace an examination by a licensed veterinarian when one is needed.
